The Department of Biosciences, established in 2003 with an aided MSc Biotechnology program, has evolved into a comprehensive department offering undergraduate programs in Biotechnology and Microbiology, as well as postgraduate programs in Microbiology and Biochemistry. Presently, the department is a recognized research hub affiliated with Mahatma Gandhi University, boasting five research guides. The department continues to advance with a clear vision of fostering research acumen in young minds.
Key features of the department include the regular conduct of seminars and workshops, supported financially by UGC, KSCSTE, KBC, IASc, and ASM. The department undertakes UGC minor research projects, KSCSTE-funded student research projects, and various funded extension activities. Additionally, the department laboratory, supported by DST-FIST, offers consultancy services in water quality analysis for the public and molecular identification of microorganisms.
Over the years, students from the department have excelled in their careers, becoming research associates in international laboratories, earning doctoral degrees both domestically and internationally, and securing CSIR-UGC JRF fellowships. Many alumni have also found successful careers in industry and clinical laboratories.
